What is Aquaponics?
Aquaponics is a method of farming which combines hydroponics (the cultivation of plants in a water-based medium) and aquaculture (the harvesting of fish or other marine organisms). Nitrogenous fish waste quickly becomes toxic to fish in high quantities, whereas plants frequently lack sufficient nitrogen for optimal growth. Additionally, fish can thrive on plant scraps which humans cannot digest. When we circulate water between fish ponds and vegetables growbeds, plants are able to strain the nitrogen from this water, thereby gaining precious nutrients while simultaneously cleaning the water for the fish. In this way we produce a comprehensive method of farming in which the waste products of each system serve as the nutrients for the other.
